Surface piecing prop I知 an engineering student at the University of West of England in Bristol, and I知 doing my final year project in my Master of Mechanical Engineering degree. For my project I知 designing a propeller for a model boat to break the speed record of 120 MPH (193 Kph). Does anyone have any good information on the design of surface piecing propellers? i'm looking for equations or even computer software that will help me. Thank you for your help Andrew ![]()

it is very difficult to find available informations concerning this kind of screws. Two main reasons....the first one is that the thrust direction has the possibility to be changed (Arneson) this means open water curves according to various inclinations.....second the manufacturer of these screws doesn't give such informations...to precious thing! Rolla, manufacturer of high speed piercing propeller (the best ?) has his own program and no way to have them...

Try: http://www.aeromarineresearch.com/se...lerdesign.html (real world boats) http://www.aquacraftmodels.com/boats/aqub40-main.html (model boats--link to high quality surface drive model boat) http://www.amazon.com/Propeller-Hand.../dp/0071381767 (Dave Gerr's Propeller Handbook = what the design office I worked in used for initial calculations for a fast carbon fiber boat -- new hullform for navy specwar that used 4 arneson drives with Rolla surface peircing props). Here's a link to that boat--m80 stiletto (www.mshipco.com) = http://www.mshipco.com/?page_id=11

Thank you for your replies, I've been trying to get in contact with Rolla but i'm not having much luck, does anyone know a contact name within the company? Also cheers for the links to aeromarine research, i've been trying to get in contact with them to but they never reply to emails! have you bought anything from them?

"I’m designing a propeller for a model boat to break the speed record of 120 MPH (193 Kph)" that record was held by an electric rc model boat going real fast lots of rc boat stuff, as this surface prop for only10$ is on the net here also some recent prop sawing and bending technical notes ![]()

if there wasnt more to attend i would actually be tempted to get some of those $10 model surface props to play with as for the real thing http://www.francehelices.fr/ also has some calculators and pdf's ( but looking back not that much eighter ) at the mets a few years back zf mentioned a surface drive seminair after killing them with questions like how much more the vertical force was compared to wheeling sideway's but... never drove a waterjet, sailed a tri or went to that SD seminair ![]()

Thank you for your help so far! It's been alot of help and i've got some good leads. I have managed to arrange a meeting with Qinetiq (http://www.qinetiq.com/) to see if i can use there testing tanks. So fingers crossed!!! ![]()

An electric boat just upped the record to over 140 mph. Propeller design was a big part of the effort, though the V9-- series props from Octura are very similar to the propeller used. Pictures of the record setting boats can be found in the photo gallery at www.namba19.com and in the SAWs thread of the forum at www.rumrunnerracing.com Lohring Miller
