Designing Surface Propellers

I am looking for experimental data which can help me with design of surface propellers. Such info is rather scarce especially for 6 bladed props.

Does anybody know anymore systematic series than the following ones:
-Rolla series: 4 blades published in FAST'91 and FAST'93 by Rose
-Russian Series: 5 baldes not published but see FAST'07 late this year.
-France Helices Series: Experimental data of the French Navy (anybody know more about this series?)

Ciao

Some refs

Here are some references:

Ferrando, M., 1997, “Surface Piercing Propellers:
State of the Art”, Oceanic Engineering
International, Vol. 1, No. 2, pp. 40-49.

Ferrando, M., Panarello, A., Scamardella, A.,
and Viviani, M., 2000, “Surface Piercing
Propellers for Displacing Vessels”, Proc.
of the International Conference on Ship
and Shipping Research, NAV 2000, pp.
6.2.1-6.1.16.

Ferrando, M., Scamardella, A., Bose, N., Liu,
P., and Veitch, B., 2001, “Performance of
a family of Surface Piercing Propellers”,
Paper No. W283, Transaction of RINA.

If you are going to design your own propellers I would recommend that you get home of a good CFD code (or write your own).

Best regards,

Petter

Hi Petter,
thanks for the references. I did not know about the last one and that one sounds very interesting.

It sounds like you have experience in doing surface propeller calculations using CFD?

I have working at Yellowfin the since 1999 with all aspect of surface piercing propeller design and integration/interaction between hull and propulsor. We use a CFD code that is developed “in house” for all our propulsor design; we have done a significant amount of full-scale verification work.
Are you looking to design/manufacture your own propellers or are you looking to for propeller sizing tool?
Regards,

Hi Peter,
I am in developing a tool to be able to size propellers and match them to a engine & gearbox. I have found that working with propeller suppliers to be less than satisfactory as even the big players who are supposed to be good at design of propellers make some spectacular errors sometime.

I would be interested to know more about your design tools and the possibility of collaborating. I would also like to know more about your surface drives. I would be interested in looking at it for some of my applications.

Best Regards

Gunther

Was the russian series 5 blades in FAST07 any good?
Did you read it?
