Help!!! parts fell out

I had to drop my lower unit to replace the shift cable. I separated the lower from the upper unit and 2 pieces just fell out. both pieces are flat thin metal about 1/8 inch thick. I didn't think to take a photo of them before I left where I'm working on the boat so I did a rough drawing of them. I have a Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive. part 1 is about 2in long 1/4 wide and part 2 is a thin plate with holes in it about 2in in diameter.

NOTE: the holes in part 2 are not exact. I don't remember how many holes there are and their location in the plate.

I have checked this site http://www.sterndrive.info/alpha-one...ing_upper.html and don't see the parts anywhere in the upper or lower unit drawings

These look like they may be the exhaust flappers valves? They're suppose to be in the upper section of the Y Pipe of the exhaust. Look at the parts catalog for the flapper and see if these could be those.

I didn't know that I had exhaust flappers. I have a single exhaust on a mercruiser 3.0L and the exhaust goes into the sterndrive through a exhaust bellow. would I still have something like that?

I think I found exactly what You were talking about. Now that I found an image of one I can see it.

Note: I failed to mention that the engine did overheat. Seeing as the flapper is metal encased in a plastic/rubber material I may have melted the casing and those parts worked their way through the exhaust.

Thanks very much.

On Alpha One drives there is no need to separate upper and lower units for shift cable change out. In your case, sounds like it was a good thing units were split.

Sure find it hard to see how a broken flapper could work its way from the y-pipe through the exhaust bellows and all the way down to the lower unit. The flapper diameter looks to big to fit but I guess its the only explanation for mystery piece.

Good time to replace water impeller.

Thanks for the replies. It was the exhaust flapper. After I took the exhaust apart I found the other half. The reason I separated the two halves was because I wanted to change the impeller while I had it out of the water.
