Maritime news items http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...section=justin NZ rescue teams to resume yacht search tomorrow Rescue teams in New Zealand say they will continue searching at dawn tomorrow for a yacht that is missing in the Pacific Ocean. Nine people, including four Australians, are believed to be on board the 28-metre Alvei, which was due to arrive in New Zealand four days ago. A small plane has spent the day trailing part of the yacht's scheduled route. A New Zealand Air Force Orion will join the rescue effort tomorrow to cover an expanded search area.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/12/06/2111159.htm NZ air force finds missing schooner Posted 51 minutes ago Found: Contact was made with the Alvei this morning (alvei.com) New Zealand authorities have found a schooner that has been missing in the South Pacific with nine people on board, including four Australians. A New Zealand Air Force Orion spotted the Alvei becalmed about 760 kilometres north of New Zealand a short time ago. The schooner had failed to arrive in the Bay of Islands from Vanuatu on Saturday and had not made radio contact in several days. Julia Lang from the Rescue Coordination Centre of Maritime New Zealand says the ship's skipper has now made contact with rescuers. "The Orion are actually speaking with the skipper as I speak with you," she said. "What we've been able to glean at the moment is that all people on board are safe, however the skipper says there's not enough breeze and so he expects he won't be making it to New Zealand for another eight to 10 days."

Everything is bigger over this way, just google: "big pineapple", "big banana", "big lobster", "big cow" etc.. Travellers driving E/W across Australia are advised to carry plenty of water, and fit an HF radio (no cellphone coverage) and subscribe to one of several nets with access to RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service). At one stage I was looking after a small, 500,000 acre sheep-station (a combination of "Gilroyd" and "Towrana" running 42,000 head. Beyond the bragging, yes distances are a problem and I thought others may be interested in events over this side of the globe and in a thread dedicated to that purpose. No hits and it can die. I have no two war radio on land. Nah the surface is concave, we are all troglodytes. he he he.

Smugglers ditch cocaine-filled sub Colombian drug smugglers deliberately sank a submarine off the country's Pacific coast this week that had been filled with tonnes of cocaine destined for the US, the country's navy said. The homemade submarine was spotted by a Colombian air force plane and pursued by Colombian navy and US Coast Guard boats. The submarine's four crew members opened the hatches and allowed water to enter before surrendering. The craft, with an estimated capacity of 12 tonnes of cocaine, sank in 3,000 metres of water, said Admiral Edgar Cely, the navy's chief of operations. The crew's clothing was covered with traces of the white powdery drug, he said. - Reuters
