The loss of the FV Trident

The formal investigation into the capsize and loss of the fishing vessel Trident and all of her seven crew is due to resume in Aberdeen later this month.

For those of you who have been following this investigation, particularly the controversy it has raised regarding capsize and stability, the video on the following website may be of interest:

What an excellent and simple presentation on the criticality of a low VCG (vertical center of gravity) and high AOVS (angle of vanishing stability) for seagoing vessels.

What a terrible waste of money and display of ignorance this latest inquiry is.

There must be (and there have been) more effective ways of getting at the truth.

The court hearings into the loss of the Fishing vessel Trident have now concluded in Aberdeen and from recent reports in the press it would appear that the investigating Authorities, represented by Scotland’s Advocate General, are pressing the Sheriff to conclude that:

- Trident capsized and sank due to heavy weather only
- Trident’s deficient stability did not contribute to her capsize in any way

The taxpayer has been charged £6.2m for this nonsense

A critical assessment of Trident’s stability is given on:

I don't know the full story, I just pray for the lost sailors and the families.
May God take care of them
God bless them

Seems like the DfT had a busy time shredding the evidence before the start of this public inquiry:

Final report of the investigation into the loss of FV Trident

The report into the loss of the FV Trident was published today:

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukp...1298559483762A

Seems that what they are saying is that the vessel was fine apart from having unspecified ‘specific sea-keeping characteristics’ that made her different from other, very similar, 80’ vessels, no-one is to blame, the weather wasn’t bad, she just capsized in the prevailing weather conditions on 3 October 1974 and seven lives were lost……

Our sympathies are with the families who have fought long and hard to find out what happened on that day in 1974.
