| Freeboard for a small passenger craft Hey, I am carrying out a project for a GRP construction passenger craft of less than 24m LOA. I have found none english code from the MCA, or French rules applicable to that special vessels. Many rules make references to the load lines convention -which is not for vessels LOA<24m-. Does anybody knows where can I find the freeboard value for passenger craft of less than 24m? I am from Spain, but any rule of other UE contry members would be of interest. Thanks! |

| There is the MCA small craft code, it is on their website (http://www.dft.gov.uk/mca/mcga07-hom...newsletter.htm) As for freeboard. You make the freeboard high enough to pass the stability regulations...and then practical for boarding etc. |

| Thanks for your answer. However, all the SCV (small comercial vessels) codes do not allow craft which carry more thant 12 people... |

| Sorry Ad Hoc, maybe I had not used the apposite terms. My problem is that I can not find designing codes or rules for a GRP construction passenger boat of less than 24m, and operational zone near to the shore, except HSC -which allows them, but is not easy to satisfy for a 14m length boat, and non involved in an international course- The only code which has a special article for this type of boats is the australian NSCV code. But in Europe, I have found nothing... |

Use ISO in that case (http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_catalogue...csnumber=40210) |

| Project Specifications Thanks again Ad Hoc. I will try to define quite better the characteristics of the project I am carrying on. 14m LOA / GRP construction / 36 passengers / 2-5 Nm far from shore / National voyages / monohull I am looking for a code or rule appropriate to that specifications. And I am specially interested on the value of the freeboard, so as to know if I can use a leisure craft hull for converting it into passenger craft. Thank, and sorry for my english... |

| Isn't there a similar thread about commercial GRP deviations in Spain, done recently (ISO 12215-1:2000)? |

| Small passenger vessels in Spain have to comply with an specific stability requirement: With all passengers to the side in passenger intended spaces (deck) at a density of 4 (75 kg) passengers/sqm the vessel shall not heel more than 10 degrees nor submerge more than half of the initial freeboard. You may also have a look at the 2010/36/EC Directive Cheers.

| Thanks, PAR and Guillermo. About using ISO 12215; I think is just for leisure craft. |

| For vessels involved in national voyages, other than those covered by specific instruments in specific regions/group of countries (like UE), you should consult with the national authorities. For EU countries there is a specific directive for passenger vessels (all vessels acrrying more than 12 passengers) although not covering directly freeboard assigment issues (generally referring to ILCC66 which only covers vessels above 24m). This directive contains less demanding requirements for vessels engaged in more restricted operating environments. Rodrigo |

| escar99 I see you are in Banyoles, Spain. If the boat is intended to be flagged in Spain you should use the criteria in my previous post. Ask your Capitanía. Saludos.

| Thanks for the comments! Refering to my capitania -I hope you Guillermo have no relations there...- they make me satisfy a rule which talks about a freeboard of 450mm for a 12m LOA boat -too much!!-. The hull that I have doesn't overcome that value... Moreover, that rule has been extracted from 1966 international convention on load lines, and my boat is less thant 24m, but they -capitania- also apply it. That's why I am looking for an other country member rules. Administration in Spain is like my english... not very competent or serious. |
