Firstly, that seems a very short roll period, have you done it correctly?

Secondly, the nomogram does not go down to the small beam that you have for your boat, 2.5m. So you can't use this!

It is quite a short roll period. I believe I have done it correctly. An average 12.65s for 5 oscillations -> 2.53s for each oscillation.

Meanwhile I have gone through this:

Which calculates the time for 1 oscillation a bit differently...

A 2.53 sec rolling period for a 2.5 m beamed boat looks quite right to me. That makes "f" to be close to a value of 1, which is precisely the top figure the spanish and french administrations use for small fishing vessels. The rolling period in seconds being more or less equal to the beam in meters is also adequate for a sailing boat.

I sailed on the Coolidge one summer fishing for albacore tuna. She was 62 feet long, I think. The wheelhouse was forward which was a little unusual for these boats. She rolled in swells but once one got used to the motion she never varied, rolled the same in twenty foot waves. She made 13 knots on a single Allis Chalmers truck engine. A sleek seaworthy boat that carried a lot of fish. Very heavy construction.

How about all the troller out here on the west coast? Most here seem to be about 37-40 with a 12ft beam and a 6ft draft. I see all the talk about how tough they are but when I ask a guy if he would take it to hawaii he thought it would be a bad idea. I see them fish in some pretty nasty stuff. I know breuhler based his diesel duck off these designs but what do you guys think.

With luck and a little preparation almost anything can be "taken to Hawaii'. It really depends on the individual boat, it's design, construction, and maintenance. But more depends on you and your skill set, people sail to Hawaii in Columbia 26's, no problem......coming back may be less fun.....

But remember you are risking your life, just as you do when you cross the street.....so figure the odds and stack them a bit in your favor....you can always find "a guy" who thinks it's a bad idea to get out bed in the morning......

Well, back home and to my good old MARIE, I have to say the RINA's Forum on the safety of small FVs was most interesting. RINA will post soon information on the forum and the diverse presentations and debates there at their web pages. So I will not extend myself on this.

But I do not want to lose the oportunity to heartly thanks these Boatdesign forums' fellowmember Pericles because of the most warm welcome and kind invitation for dinner with his charming family, as well as for all of the help he provided to me by picking me up with his car and driving me well in excess of 100 km to the Stansted airport.
