Naval Architect needed in San Diego, CA

Sharp Design is looking for a Naval Architect for our San Diego office.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: B.S. OR M.S. in NAVAL ARCHITECTURE

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 2 to 5 Years On-the-Job

Depending upon the particular design project, the naval architect will perform some or all of the following tasks:

• Determine each client’s requirements based on first person interviews;
• Determine the most suitable vessel size and configuration to meet design, performance and cost requirements identified by client;
• Research and select fundamental materials and machinery of vessel to meet stated needs and requirements;
• Prepare preliminary design proposals and create general arrangement drawings for custom motor yachts ranging from 65’ to 300’ meeting client’s needs and requirements;
• Alternately, create design proposals and general arrangement drawings for production motor yachts ranging from 42’ to 75’ meeting manufacturer’s requirements;
• Develop 3D electronic models in Rhino 3D, RhinoMarine, AutoHydro or similar programs;
• Conduct performance, power, hydrostatic, stability and damaged stability analysis of proposed designs and prepare professional reports to client on same;
• Recommend propulsion, steering, mechanical, electrical, navigation, communication and HVAC systems to meet vessel/client requirements;
• Estimate vessel construction costs and operating budgets;
• Determine optimum hull shape based on hydrodynamic analysis and/or model testing;
• Design all accommodation spaces, cargo areas, cargo handling machinery, machinery spaces, deck layout, mooring arrangements and recreational areas;
• Perform structural analysis and develop structural scheme to handle all expected loads under all anticipated operating conditions;
• Ensure proposed designs meet the requirements of Classification Society selected, if applicable;
• Coordinate the work of project engineers, drafters and designers in developing all components and system concepts to meet client/vessel needs;
• Supervise and provide guidance to drafters, designers and project engineers preparing detailed designs, specifications and building specifications and contracts
• Obtain client approvals for plans developed;
• Help prepare bid packages for submission to candidate builders;
• Participate in client/builder negotiations of construction contract(s);
• Periodically supervise and inspect construction work at selected builder’s yard;
• Plan, supervise and evaluate sea trials of completed vessel.

Additionally, periodic attendance at Yacht Industry shows, symposiums or technical exchanges may be required. Travel will be necessary from time to time but is unlikely to be more than 10-15% of work time.
