    SALARY RANGE: 77,353.00 - 100,554.00 USD per year

    MAJOR DUTIES:
    The selectee for this position serves as a Mechanical Engineer in the Boat Engineering Branch. The Boat Engineering Branch is responsible for initiation, development and review of all design work for new construction, modernization, overhaul, conversion, maintenance, repair and engineering changes of boats and special craft up to 140 feet in length.

    As a Mechanical Engineer with the U.S. Coast Guard, you will be responsible for all aspects of marine and mechanical engineering of high speed advanced marine vehicles, small cutters and boats including main and auxiliary propulsion machinery, their controls and support equipment; steering and stabilization machinery; HVAC machinery; boat launch and recovery systems; other material handling equipment such as cranes for Aids to Navigation; firefighting and fire suppression equipment. In addition, the incumbent will: develop conceptual machinery design studies for proposed vessels to determine if there are mutually conflicting or impractical operating requirements or characteristics; identify, analyze and resolve design problems resulting from conflicting demands on space, weight and cost of various systems; develop design requirements, plans and specifications for boat design and construction; coordinate and integrate inputs from Coast Guard and industry experts to develop original design requirements; provide technical expertise within the Branch in the field of mechanical engineering; troubleshoot problems aboard marine craft; determine solutions to those problems; develop engineering changes, including drawings and specifications to describe the specific corrective modifications to be made; work with industry standard computer programs and be familiar with Computer Aided Design with AutoCAD; prepare statements of work, estimates and schedules for contactors to design mechanical systems for boats; monitor progress and quality of work being conducted by the contractors; and communicate effectively with others both orally and in writing.
