I just signed a contract this week to build a sailing boat for a client residing in China. Perhaps this says something.......

You say there are no free minds in China, well I work in China, I see freed minds at least once a week, splattered all over the road from motorcycle or bicycle accidents, you are very wrong my friend.

You are spot on with that. I have seen my fair share of those 'free minds' as well in the past 14 years, and with growing traffic, and loads of inexperienced drivers it will only get worse. Add to that that 85% of the population has the strong feeling that laws and regulations do not apply to them.

I've met quite a few Free Minds in China the past 3 months...

Most of them are young people (20 to 30) from the Provinces that have come to Southern China. One is a writer who is supporting himself fixing computers in the daytime. When I asked him if he needed to ask the government before he published a book, he said No, this is ShenZhen, and there is a lot of freedom here.

I told him that before I came to live in China, I read of an old Chinese expression, from the Provinces, when one Dynasty or another was in power:

"The Sky is High, and the Emperor is Far Away"

"Yes! He said, "in Chinese that is (I don't understand much Chinese!)... We say that often here!"

That's certainly the feeling I get, here.

Hi, All,

I have not logged in for a long time and happened to see this thread today.

As a Chinese man of 31 years old, with around 6 years' experience in China yacht industry and dealing with all kinds of international people and companies, I personally and subjectively think I might be in a better position to discuss this issue with all of you.

First of all there is one thing here I do not like and it is that there are always a few people there in the forum would like to mess the politics, races, cultures, educations, nationality up with building yachts in China. Although there is some connections among those above issues but I really do not think the problems in the politics, races, educations of China have a lot to do with building boats or the boat market here.

Lots of people and even some of my friends are buying yachts most of which are from U.S.A and Europe. Seems those rich Chinese people likes those Searay, Carver, Sunseeker..... and lots of Chinese use Sony, Dell, IBM notebook; Nokia or Motorola mobiles; wear Nike, Adidas clothings;shop in Walmar........ Seems we are buying whole a lot of Foreign products but not a lot are complaining about those foreign companies are raping our income and taking away the jobs...........

I understand China is not so free as those western countries but for me I could run my own company, travel to any country I can, blame or play jokes on those high governmental officials with my friends, have full access to the internet, more importantly build or sell any boat...... Seems we are having some freedom here and actually we are getting more.

Anyway too much for those nonsense and let us talk about boats:

I think there will be a good market here for boats due to the fact that China has a very long coast line and inland river, lake system; that some of the Chinese peope are becoming rich enough to afford the boats; that some of Chinese are building up their interest on boats. However there are a few issues We have to solve and those are cleaning the polluted water and sea, improve the security problems; building up the infrasturctures; improve the big gap between the rich and poor.

Brunswick is doing a very good job here in China and they are selling U.S.A made boats and engines, building some small boats here, building marinas here.......... Very successful and this might say someting too.

Ahh the tenacity of the Chinese. Thats what made Hong Kong great, the British freedom and the tenacity of the Chinese.

How do you think corruption will affect the Marine industry?

I know that In Thailand I had a boat damaged by a big shot who had'nt tied his boat up correctly . I was advised not to even mention it to him.

I suppose the poor guy would have been embarrased and then would have had to have me shot so as to regain his importance.

As Governments go, China has a pretty bad one. It (China) could do something with Burmas Government also , but prefers not to.

Their thinking seems to be arse about elbow some how.

Its the Government that keeps the people not the other way round.
