Concept artist wanted Posted earlier in the year, but we still need help. We are starting an 87' Motor sailer and need more ideas, its on our front page Trying to use the popular looks that todays automobiles as an indicator of what people like. Agressive, sharp transistion lines, intimidating, "Wow" when entering the marina. Examples are Sasa's 75' motor sailer and Peter's 85' on the front page and yes, Sasa's power cat on our front page, gets a lot of hits. www.pedigreecats.com There will be more twists to the 80'+ motor sailer on our front page as we try to tweek it into the look clients are interested in. We offer to display concepts of Catamatans 60' up, sail and power, with direct links to your site or e-mail for further work. Clients then can contact you directly to continue with more detail and interior work, if you do that. (Sasa landed a big contract from his displayed work) Members work is on our site now, front page and we have built the Judylan power cat from the artists work, launched and being enjoyed. Next to launch, the 73' Sport Fisher. If a client is interested in a concept, they are directed to the artist to work with them directly to the end result they are after in their dream Cat. We chose what is used, based on our clients past request and some times, hire further work we feel is worth further effort. Simple pencil sketches through to finished in the water pictures, usually after a client has reached to point of continueing the build.

So You put pictures on the web, without checking feasibility from engineering side?

| All the cats are designed structually by proven multihull designers, the foot print of the size a client wants. The client over the last 20 years have gotten the look they want, staying within the guidelines set by the designers. Every client gets exactly what they want their dream to look like, with the help of concept artists. Aritsts base most their submissions on a clients input, not wasted because if they don't like it, someone else may. The Judylan on our site was that way, not quite what the original client wanted, but Jack and Judy loved it and continued for quite some time with the artist to continue, paying him directly and I have no idea how much. That cat we built and is now in Florida somewhere. The 73' Sport fisher on our front page was designed by Stuart Bloomfield, but the final look was done by the artist and owner, traditional, but tweaked a bit. The 87' motor sailer will be done the same way, basic design by designer and then the owner and artist will make it look the way it will be built. Under construction at this point and on our site, hull sides do have their final look or close, but a lot of work on the hulls (water line down) must be done the way the designer says. | In our practice, 'concept' is set of following: - exterior renderings - interior renderings (X-Ray view of interior, with transparent deck) - general arrangement drawings - sail and rig plan (for sailing boats) - lines plan - preliminary table of weights - preliminary calculations of hydrostatics - preliminary calculations of performance - preliminary lamination schedule - preliminary list of equipment - preliminary main particulars This concept design set gives the idea of what is the boat, proves that concept is feasible and allows the builder to give estimate of cost. What You call 'concepts' are just pictures... in my understanding ![]() |

Alik, That is already the conceptual design stage where you get paid for. The first stage is a concept, an idea, a picture (as the PS stated) wherein the customer takes a look at the proposed design and say yes or no. If he agrees, then that is the time he put in his money and the design spiral begins. Rx

What is not clear from Pedigreecats is who pays whom when the client is, say interested but haven't nod yet saying I want this and that changed/altered. |

I just want to figure out how they use renderings to attract the customers. On what basis? Why designer should be interested? There is certain category of builders (I not mean Pedigree) whom we call 'concept hunters'. They use pictures to attract the customers, and then go on their own once the client is hooked. To be fair, it should be either stock design that designer will sell to customer once he decides to go ahead, or these concepts should be ordered/paid by builder. At least in my understanding.

I think Pedigree wants only conceptual drawings or artist as he himself is a boatbuilder. Right Pedigree?

You both are right in some ways, but in our 36 years, we have asked and paid for concepts. The problem was. when we got them, they were from the fisrt grade class, nothing anyone wanted to see. There are links to the artists on our site, you might ask them, the one who is working on the Sport Fisher has been employeed for 2 years as we build what they create. The artist that did the "Judylan" ower cat, at least a year. The "Urban 64" was a short time as the client died just after his deposit was sent to build his dream We supply a place for artists to show what they think the current interests should look like based on what was requested by inquiring parties. Hopefully a client likes where they are headed and continues with them directly. There are a couple of examples of artists work that have never or very few hits on, of interest. Everyone one hears a different drummer, mosty of us do not drive the same white VW.

OK, Replied to that, also looked up the hit source counter on our site, over 100 from around the world from this forum in the last 12 hours. It would be very hard for us to pay each artist for samples, that inquires about this offer to display their work, with out first seeing their web site of examples (boats and cars, not tennis shoes) We did pay an artist that had submited a Ferrari style concept car design, to do a cat for us and I was very surprised, you wouldn't believe what came back. So its a challenge to keep everyone happy with the process, but there are links to artists on our site to ask how they have been treated over our last 36 years of building custom composite multihulls.

As far as pay, its from the client direct, pays for as far as they want to go. The sport fisher on our front page, the artist is still working with that client, 24 months now, on the interior at this point. The "Judylan" was a result from us asking Pasadena school of art, if there was an artist that would take a Cadillac CTS and morph it into a cat and see what we get. Dave Triano got the look a client grabed and work with to get what we finnaly built. About that same time Sasa also came up with a twist to that look, which I like even better. What they charged, I don't know, but never heard a complaint from any client about what they paid to get what they want. Just in ! leo wu TZ3D DESIGN STUDIO WWW.TZ3D.COM Looks like we'll be showing Leo's work, he just sent a beautiful cat he wants us to post and I'm sure it will draw attention, hopefully a lot of work for him.
