community boat builder needed in Cohasset Ma

Introduction: CMI and its sister organization, the Center for Student Coastal Research (CSCR), are educational non profits engaged in the missions of preserving Cohasset's surfboat history, building small wooden boats, providing recreational and competitive rowing programs while also engaging youth in the scientific process by conducting water quality monitoring, habitat assessment, and ecological research in our marine environment. CMI operates out of a historic boathouse and CSCR's lab is next door in the locally famous Hagerty House, the office of marine architect Francis Hagerty. Both structures sit on the edge of beautiful Cohasset Harbor.

Current situation: CMI currently is restoring a 26' carvel planked on oak frame lifeboat. Some work has been done (ribs replaced), but stem, garboard, planking, and caulking still remains to be done. The boat will keep alive Cohasset's claim as home to America's first official lifesaving station. The boat will also be used as an exploratory and education "research vessel" for CSCR programs.

Goal and Need: The goal is to establish a self sustaing community boat restoration and small craft building program. We need a talented craftsman and educator who wants to take ownership of the restoration and make his or her mark in the community boatbuilding world by jump starting, designing, and sustaining a program in Cohasset, Ma.

Funding for the position is uncertain right now, but self-starters with modest needs might just find this to be a great place to launch a name, a historic vessel and a program.

Please contact Jack Buckley, 781 383 0129, the phone number of CSCR or email Jack at jcbuckleyjr@gmail.com
