Westlawn vs. McNaughton

Anybody out there have experience with either Westlawn or McNaughton for Yacht Design? I am considering enrolling in one of them (or another where I can do distance learning) and am looking for pros/cons with either. I'd appreciate any input, either from the student side or from the potential employer side.

I've enjoyed sailing now for about 6 years and am trying to figure out how to change careers to something connected to my passion for sailing!

Thanks...

After reading the FAQ at McNaughton I think they have a good concept. That's all I can say for now.

If you are interested in a career related to sailing, become a broker. The designer makes a fee of about 3% to design a boat, but the broker makes 10-12% to sell it.

There are also a lot more yachts sold every year than built.

Money

If money is the only motivating force then get a job as a stockbroker or an attorney. If creating something where it did not exist before is the thing that you want to do, then study design. I do things because I enjoy them, not because of the money. I may not be rich but I think I am a lot happier then some other people that I know who are very well to do but only get to spend time on their boat a very small percentage of the time.

I have the perfect job for someone that enjoys the water. I run the sailing and boat building school for the Hudson Fisheries Trust in Beacon New York. The money is adequate and I get to spend my time with boats and kids year round. Can you image that; someone pays me to do what I enjoy as a hobby.
All the best,
Robert Gainer
