Hull changes shape above the waterline like some multis.

I noticed that on Comanche-Eric Sponberg used a "step"(stepped chine) like that on an ocean racer many years ago.

"This about developing technology. This is about finding out new things. This is about exploring," he said. "And the story of engineering exploration is about the failures and the challenges, not just about the successes."

    Sydney -Hobart Big Boat Race

From Scuttlebutt tonight: read whole article here: http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2...axi prelude to Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
Maxi prelude to Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

Sydney, Australia (December 8, 2014) – The nation will get their first look at Jim Clark and Kristy Hinze-Clark’s new super maxi Comanche in race mode tomorrow (Dec. 9), when the 21st SOLAS Big Challenge starts on Sydney on Sydney Harbour at 12.30pm, in a prelude to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Testosterone will be flying when the distinctive red and black schemed 100 foot yacht from Rhode Island in America, with its white Indian feather nestled between the two colours, takes on an otherwise Australian fleet.

What better way to celebrate turning 21 than having the world’s most technically advanced but untested super maxi on the start line. The hull will carry some of the biggest names in sailing, including skipper Ken Read and navigator, Stan Honey, along with Australia’s Casey Smith as sailing master, when Comanche takes on the Aussies.

The crews of Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats XI (skippered by Mark Richards), the most successful Rolex Sydney Hobart and SOLAS Big Boat Challenge (SBBC) line honours winner, Anthony Bell’s s Perpetual Loyal (the former Speedboat/Rambler) and Peter Harburg’s Volvo 70 Black Jack, to be skippered by Mark Bradford, will do everything possible to prevent an American win.

Like their foe, the Australian boats come equipped with their own ‘heavies’ from Australia and abroad, but Mark Richards holds the key to all, having taken line honours seven out of nine times since Oatley launched Wild Oats X in 2005.

In that video comanche looks pretty slow... It looks a lot faster in the other one.

Actually, I was impressed with her height and speed compared to the 18s around her. However, there does seem to be a lot of turbulence about the keel root, and as widely speculated that hull shape may encounter a lot of wetted surface drag in our sloppy offshore conditions. ORMA-shaped boats have rarely performed in Australian conditions. The modified Open 60 Xena was an exception; she was a fun boat to sail the only time I tried.

    From Scuttlebutt Europe today:

Rolex Sydney To Hobart - Wilds Oats XI: Winging It To Hobart

She's the Grande Dame of ocean yacht racing and had near a dozen makeovers in the past 10 years.

Now it's hoped her latest upgrade will literally wing her to unsurpassed levels of acclaim on the international sailing scene.

The 'Grande Dame' is the 30-metre long supermaxi, Wild Oats XI - already the most successful yacht to have contested the famous Rolex Sydney Hobart classic in the event's 70-year history.

In little more than three weeks, when the 628 nautical mile race gets underway on Sydney Harbour, Wild Oats XI's owner, businessman and philanthropist Bob Oatley AO, will know he has done everything possible to give his sleek silver yacht the chance of making sailing history by being the first to finish in Hobart for an unprecedented eighth time.

At the same time he will be hoping that a development of the radical hydrofoil wing concept he pioneered on the yacht last year will make a significant contribution to her success this time around.

The retractable horizontal wing was used to dramatic effect in the 2013 Hobart race. It helped Wild Oats XI come from behind and claim line honours over Anthony Bell's highly fancied supermaxi, Perpetual Loyal. Now 86-year-old Oatley has decided bigger is better: after consulting with his design team, and the yacht's skipper, Mark Richards, the decision was made to make the wing longer for this year's race so the benefits it delivered could be achieved in lighter winds. -- Rob Mundle

I didn't watch enough to compare it to much else, maybe just no wind and uncanted keel made it look like it was slow even when getting a good bit of power.
