Sleeve repair opinions please

Hi, newbie here to the forums,

I wanted to get peoples option mast repair with sleeve.
I'm looking at buying a 30' One Design sportboat that had a mast failure (due to improper rigging - the Chicken Stays where not connected for a few seasons) and has what looks like a professionally installed sleeve installed into the cabin steeped aluminum mast.

This was repaired about 6 years ago and I know the current owner has raced the heck out of this boat for the past 4 years. I've raced my self as crew for tens years but never owned. So I'm not sure what to think of such a repair when it comes to buying something like this? Apparently the break was in the lower few feet of the mast (sounds like from the result of the stays not compensating for pressure applied from the boom - the boat is also backstayless by design). The current owner tells me its a non-issue - I just happen to be researching this design (very few hulls every produced - the design class faded out).

So what do people think moving forward. Is this something to dicker on purchase price or run away from altogether?

This appears to be a pretty standard riveted splice.

FYI, aluminum masts are normally built form 40 foot extrusions. So pretty much every mast you see in the marina or on the water with a mast over 40 feet in total length has a splce in it. Some are welded, some are rivited, some are screwed.

Is this a Cheetah 30 we are talking about?

FYI, I (and some others) think the stock mast on the Cheetah is way too flexible when you are powered up upwind. The boat does like going downwind in a breeze though!

IIRC, you do want to use the gooseneck stays when raising and lowering the mast as well.

If you ever need the same extrusion for repair or replacement I believe it is a Dwyer extrusion.

Before worrying about the splice on the mast I would worry about the keel. One Cheetah out here had the keel drop out of the bottom. The one I sailed on then checked the lifting/locking mechanism and found bent/broken bolts. Another had the keel come loose and had to strap the keel in place to get home from Catalina Island. That boat later had the keel break in half during a Wednesday night race. Alan Andrews did a keel re-design for that boat last year.

Paul - I appriciate the intel on this. I'd like to learn as much as possible about these boats but not sure this is the venue for such a discussion? Would you be interested in chatting out of forum?

Sure. Send me your contact info in a Private Message and I will get back to you.

Have you talked to Bob Ames (the designer)? Is your boat an original or one of the boats built by the Corsair Tri shop?

No - But I'd love the chance to talk to Bob. I hear there were 7 hulls in total. Then theres the one on sailing anarchy right now that is from the same plug but using Mumm 30 rigging. PM you in a minute.

Thanks.
