Shorten the keel on a Hunter 27?

After spending the summer "plowing mud" to get in and out of the harbor (w/ a 4'3" draft) I am considering a "keel bob" as a winter project. I don't need to remove much, 6-8" would do it. My idea is to recast the lead into a bolt on bulb/wing. I've searched this site, there is a ton of good info (much of it over my head). So, any comments, advice, suggestions? Thanks in advance.
