Sail Layout books

Hello all,

I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a book that will help with the designing of sail layouts- what will work, etc. I have some basic square footage literature in some of my design books, but of the two I am reading through one is a technical introduction to Naval Architecture by Tupper focusing on much larger vessels (but good knowledge to have) and the other is a basic guide to boat design, with very basic formulas for people thinking to build and/or design a much smaller boat. The second has some basic square footage formulas for sail area calculations, but I would like to be pointed in the direction of what rig works best for what, and how to lay it out.

Just FYI, I'm not a student who's not done his homework, or looking to design the next Titanic (pun intended). I just want dabble in my shop and computer.

Hi KdHorton,

Just thought I throw this your way. I've started a similar thread that may help.
"lug sail rigging info"
I think some of the replies I got, may be helpful to you as well.

regards,
DE

Thanks! That's pretty much what I'm looking for, for starters.

A great book is:" The Art and Science of Sails" by Tom Whidden. "A Guide to Modern Materials, Constructions, Aerodynamics, Upkeep and Use". An indispensible book for a complete overview of sails.

Check out the Sailcut program. It is open source and does just about anything.
