| Rephrasing... Hey I ound this all interesting to so I'll rephrase the original question. When (if) you design a sailboat, how do you dicide where to put your reefpoints and where... Hey I do realize that some might answer in exactly the same way as before, with that big ole "that depends on", because it does BUT... When you've made your basic design and is working out the final rig and sailplan you have to dicide where to put them right? So state an example and explain why they are, where they are. As for having a mathematic formula, I don't think so. You might be able to use a part of some VPP code to see what specific issue(s) causes th vpp to add reefing into the equation. |

| I think that at the heart of your question there is an erroneous assumption that the designer figures out where the reef points go. That is rarely the case even when we show the reef points on the drawings. More typically a sailmaker will make the decision based on a consultation with the owner. The drawings for my current boat, showed the reef points on it. My boat is 20 years old and has three different mainsails and each one has the reef points at different points on the sail. Beyond that, when you are talking about a rig that is so rare and so poorly regarded (a Bermuda schooner) as a sailing rig, there really is no precident to use as a basis. Respectfully, Jeff |
