Reduce Sail ? undefinedI would like to know if this is a valid idea- I want to reduce sail area by cutting main mast down to the a size that would make the reef point the full sail area on an old 20' racing day sailer. I am making boat into crusing/gunkholing poor man,s trawler, with tabernacle mast. Thoughts anyone ? -- Thanks Dan

My view is if, within reason, it helps you get on your boat faster and provides enjoyment, go for it. Having said that, why not just sail with a reefed main or if necessary, cut down the mainsail? As a sailor, I prefer having the horsepower available in a sail, rather than sitting there wishing I had a bigger sail. This is specifically for Florida where I find summer winds fickle and winter winds just nice. If the boat is going to be primarily a power cruiser then it won't be as important to have a large sail area. I would think the expense of cutting the mast down would be much more than working with just the sails. Cheers, Ian Grampian 23, #299

You say you want to reduce sail area, not height off the water. Why kick the dog when you're pissed at the cat? Putting in a reef or having your sail recut sounds like you'd be addressing the question (the dog shouldn't crap in you shoe later either) Cutting the pole doesn't solve anything, you'll still need the reef or cut down sail sliding up it. Spare the poor stick, go home, yell at the cat while you cut down the sail.
