Hi Dough,

Giving your understanding of foiling do you think a mini 6.5 would be able to sustain constant foiling? Have you seen Simon Koster's new mini 888?

Wavesails, I'm not sure it could under the rules but maybe. If the rules of physics were the only ones that applied, then definitely. I'd like to see the DSS Mini get tuned up and race. I don't think I've seen 888-could you post a picture or a link?

Sure here are a couple images Simon has on his Facebook page.

Yes there are limitationd for and the boat you show with DSS has a narrow beam to allow the foil to be within the 3 metre box rule.

888 has l foils I am not sure what is teh displacement and total weigth of the Quant 23 but I would say that even if that it does not sustain out of the water in full foiling mode skimming on a 3.5k miles race would be a huge bonus.

Mini foiler

Wow! that is very cool! I can see that when heeled the lee foil would form a "V" like an uptip foil. And because it has rudder T-foils it's very likely designed for flying, not just foil assist like DSS.
Thanks for pointing this boat out!

Thanks Doug,

I have seen that before I am interested in something similar but it has to work for the mini's so a solution like this has to fit within the 3 metre beam without reducing the aft beam I will be following through the race to see if Simon Koster's boat wil do well.

The open 60's with side foils are expecting to have these giving an extra edge for the long races in the Fastnet they did not made a great difference due to light upwind on the way to the rock

The Open 60's aren't using a foil like the Quant 23. They're shooting for foil assist but not full flying. Should that change you'll know by the new rudder T-foils they'll have!
When you find out more about that mini, post something here or in another thread-I'm real interested.

I know they are going foil assist, I would too. I mean I would not like to be loosing too much surface contact in the southern ocean.

My bet for the ninis is a combo of foils DSS mid bow and a central blade foil like moth's use. mount that on a canting case and it will work to even sort the leeway issue
