Possibility of a Sharpie "Coot" Kit

Like lots of other people i am really taken by the 1945 (i think) design of the 22' Sharpie "Coot" and i am thinking of building one. like lots of others, if my research is anything to go buy, have tried to find updated plans with no success.

SO..............

I happen to be in a position that, if i go to the expense of having plans drafted and modernised; and going through the legals etc to not breach copyright, i have production facilities to produce 10 or 20 hull "kits". this would be a one off exercise and i have, as of now, no idea of the cost - it would be "reasonable" though. The materials cost is a pittance compaired to the Drafting, full scale printing and man and machine hours for cutting and putting it simply it makes no difference weather i load 1 sheet of ply or 10.

Initially im hoping to gauge the likely response and any potential takers. i thought it would make a nice sub forum for a group of like minded people to be simultaniously building the same boat - especially one that has generated such interest for 65 years!

An interesting idea, and if you manage to pull the project together I wish you luck. For me personally, the Coot is smaller than what I'd like to build.

I own a "kitchen" manufacturing facility - only a small one - that went bust last year (when all the worlds bankers took a bit too much coke and gave away all our money). There is about 5000sq ft of semi automated production facility just sat there doing didly squat. Once i have the CAD data its a doddle to produce as many as you want. I could even produce them in HPL so they would never rot! or produce the plywood panels and vac form a 1mm hi gloss vynal top coat - you couold have it coated in Sabre Ebony or Steamed Plum LOL

I wish I'd replied to this sooner! but I wholeheartedly support the idea of an updated Coot. It's an incredibly beautiful boat, that captures all kinds of character and emotion. She'd make an incredible production boat, or even just an ideal set of plans for the home builder!

So have you made any progress or gone forward at all?

A boat like the Coot would be incredible today, if she could be updated for stich and glue or even just plywood and fiberglass laminate construction. Just need someone smarter than be to do the (re)Designing!

Well things have moved on - im in the process of moving from the UK to Bulgaria on the Black Sea coast. Now they still know how to build boats in Bulgaria and boatbuilders get paid a whopping £1 an hour or so. So whilst its not on the top of the list at the mo i have a guy over there going to try a few stitch and glue kayaks to begin with before maybe giving the coot a go!?!?!

So things moving on.......... and the calm black sea would be a lovely place for a little fleet of coots..........!

Hi my name is Phil and I am currently building the Coot, i am laying the bottom planks as I type LOL. not really but during the days I am off its getting done. I am also an engineer with access to CAD software I would not mind working on the drawings but there is some moderday modifications I would suggest. I think the design's age and the fact that it is common knowledge suggest that their is no intelectual property issues.

I Phil. Id be real interested in talking to you. The main issue with getting it done in Bulgaria is they have NO CONCEPT of the inch or how to work with it and i really mean this. It is so alien they can just do nothing!
