Usually for comparative study the sail area is divided by the displacement volume raised to the two thirds power. The ratio normally is allowed to get larger with an increase in length. First the volume is squared and then the cube root is found and finally divided into the sail area. For a forty foot cruising boat the range of the ratio might be 14 on the low end and 19 on the high end.
