| Outboards practical or ugly look to the sailboat Hi:Friends, Iam thinking in put a big outboard in my other boat a Newport 27, the last owner cross a lot of nautical miles with a atomic Bomb"4" and a 25hp Johnson. He rebuild in 8 years the Atomic two times big time butalways have minor problems like, stuffing box leaking, rotten hoses, bad carb, broke ignition etc all related to the inboard nightmares. Its not matter of broken tthings is the fact that always need to check everything and the dificult to work in one. With outboards the only complain I have is the fact of the getting in and out of the water. But thats happen because we put small engines like 10 and 15hp when the big wave came they dont have to much power and the sailboat rock in the wave. Why dont happen in motor boats because they have speed and power. We a 30hp in a 27 believe me its a lot of power I hope that stop that problem, modern outboards are fully sealed and its imposible to the water get in. In big boats like my Columbia 39 is a diferent way you need diesel power to moved and the other matter if I put a outboard in him he lose 10 grands in the moment but practical yes, zero maintaince, more reliable and more economic in mecanics parts etc. What are the comments of the other sailors?????. Thanks. |

| "Sail Drive" Some boats use the Volvo sail drive type setup others use a Outboard in a bay. You could probably build a bay for an outboard on a 27 but you won't be able to get it out of the water so the propellor will be spinning and or dragging.

| Hi Asathor, yeah I saw the other day a Newport 27 with the outboard in the transom like pearson 26, but the idea that dont push me to do that its the smell and a little bit more of noise. Iam thinking in make a box that cover the motor in some part to trap the noise an d the smell but at the same way have fast access to the motor to get it up and work with him. About the bay a putted a thread here one time ago about that. But thinking more I dont want to have the boat more out of the water and thats a concept that take a lot of perfect work, other thing was the drag like you say. But still a good idea and very reliable because saildrive are cost and heavy not like an outboard. Thanks for your comments. |

| Swim platform A swim platform could do tripple duty. Swim, motor and extend the waterline.
