Odd composite mast step.....

34' sloop displ. 5000kg RM =?
I am replacing my mast step during a rebuild. The old timber one measured 1.5m x 50mm x 200mm.
The old one contributed to edge glued strip plank delam in the slam zone. (and too much back stay tension for stiff non-tapered mast xsection)
Would it be approriate to build one same dimensions, but with a 8mm stainless
plate glued & heavily screwed to the top and bottom face?
Would it be too stiff? I could substitute uni kevlar on bottom face.
Anyone got any references for mast steps?
Thanks.
