| Here's a snippet from Andy Rice's excellent sailjuiceblog.com site, just for you Doug: "On the Saturday, in slighter more moderate breezes, Graham lapped nearly the whole fleet in a five-lap one-hour race. This implies that the Bladerider – in those breezes – is almost 20% faster than a Musto Skiff. Bearing in mind that the leading Musto Skiff was being sailed immaculately by reigning World Champion Richard Stenhouse, that speaks volumes for the Bladerider’s speed –and Graham’s skill." |

| Nice video of foiling Moths at the recent Tiger Trophy in England. In these near ideal conditions (apart from the fact it is mid winter!) they do look good fun! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW_UfYGO3Kg |

As for near ideal conditions, all acounts say it was rather windier than most Moth sailors would consider ideal! I think the video was shot on Saturday when it was "only" 20 knots! |

| Moth on Foils-the video Quote:
Thanks again ,Pi! That is a "Moth on Foils" video if there ever was one. Damned if they don't look like little bugs in amongst the other boats-very cool. Did the Moths race in their own class or against other boats or both? Any link to the results? ===================================================== I found this from- sail-world .com Go to sail-world for more on this story: 'Tiger Winner Graham Vials' Martin Hollingshead 241 boats registered online to enter the Rutland Challenge for the John Merricks Tiger Trophy, held last weekend at Rutland Sailing Club for the 15th time. Rutland's own micro-climate made sure that by the time the first of 3 handicap races started at midday on Saturday, the forecast 12 knots had given way to a finger biting 20 knot buster. This years Tiger represented the largest mix of classes ever seen and the usual contingent of 29ers and 420s was bolstered by an influx of B14s, Fireballs, Phantoms, Foiling Moths, Merlin Rockets and a plethora of other classes. In race 1, Graham Vials put his memory of the Bloody Mary firmly behind him by lapping the majority of the fast handicap fleet in taking his first race win of the weekend in his Foiling Moth. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Interesting though behind him, it was another foiler, Sam Pascoe (Weir Wood) and an RS600 who was the only one close to him as a vast number of the fleet steadily succumbed to the 2 degree air temperature. ======================================================================= Unfortunately for Sam it was to be the only race he finished. After a collision while he was airborne, he didn't notice a severe wound in the bottom of the boat, until he landed that was, at which point the boat just kept going down, ending what could have been a solid challenge for the trophy." |

| future sailboat hull design When i was young ,, '50s and '60s, the CURRENT THINKING was that YACHTS CAN'T PLANE..... the models i made told me different....PERHAPS it should have been DISPLACEMENT HULL CAN'T PLANE....(still true)... The future of yacht design is evident, DEPENDING on rule allowances, (see foiler MOTHS) ... mOTHS HAVE always BEEN THE INNOVATORS...I built many in my teens and 20s..... In my ARROGANCE, I believe I have the next innovation in SAILING YACHT DESIGN....... and i am seeking 'someone' who has the funds to help me build it and test it..... about me: I am an australian boat designer, without N.A. quals, but I have built many boats and surfboards, (my first REAL boat at 11years old) and have followed design dev'ments since. Perhaps my ides could be tried on a MINI 6.5 TO KEEP IT CHEAP................jc |

| prisoner, the forum is a place to present ideas for "critical appraisal & scruitiny".... The community is usually very helpful and open to assisting people advance their projects/ideas/developments - this exposure may result in someone "stealing the idea" and profiting from it. That is the risk... Many who try to present "hidden ideas" are given short shift as it is not a place to seek venture capital or such like.... Some may be interested in making a deal - which could be genuine of some thieving "snake-oil merchant" looking for an opportunity... option one: Learn by observation and in small ways (within your own competencies) contribute to general debate whilst learning... option two: Present your ideas for open discussion with the risk of "idea theft" option three: As you learn your way around and develop contacts and net-friends, present your case privately - in the hope that you picked the right person ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh If you opt to show your ideas, start your own thread in the appropriate forum group ![]() Welcome to the frey.... A level of openness and honesty is generally appreciated. - - - - even an occasional dick-head like me is accepted as an intermittent stirrer & thrower of "red herrings/communist fish" as well as occasional experience based understanding in some areas... |

| thanks for the info..... of course, the only thing stopping me from trying my idea is funds..........to try it on a very small craft,,,ie.moth, would not work and to build a moth is about all i could afford at the moment... to my thinking, yacht hull design has progressed to the early 1900's...look at an INTERNATIONAL 14' CLASS hull shape and compare with the hulls that entered the barcelona race,,,(I guess that farr 60' is the fastest mono hull without foils) but when u see them up-wind they travel like a triangle. FOILS on yachts will happen soon but the only stumbling block would be if they are allowed by class rules... Once yachts are on FOILS, hull shape becomes fairly irrelevant.........jc |
