| A more marketable sailboat design idea? I keep reading threads about designing ocean passage makers for those that have no money. Although fun to read, they seem to go nowhere. Here's my "I wish someone would design it" thread. I'd like a charter sailboat designed for two families. Seriously, I can't find something like this. I'm talking 2 master staterooms in the back and bunk rooms for all the kiddies in the front. Probably 2 heads, grown up head in back, kiddie head in bow. It will probably be chartered no longer than two weeks, usually less. possibly 45 - 50 feet. I'd like it to have good light air sailing qualities, it can have a deep keel. Simple systems! Its going to be run by people unfamiliar with it. Where we live we would LOVE to charter a boat like this. This would allow us to split the cost and take people out into the islands that are not sailors. Or, just don't have a suitable boat. The kids would love it! But as far as I can tell, it does not exist. All the charter boats I've seen are all about lavish staterooms for the owner and everyone else is left to pretty much fend for themselves. What do you think? Ideas? -jim lee |

| Jim there are dozens of designs that fit your requirements. Typically these would be charter specific and the accommodations cutup as you've asked. Establish a budget and start with the obvious choices, like the Moorings, etc. In this market, if you can't find just the boat you want at half the price you expected to pay, you're just not looking. On the other hand, if you want a custom or semi custom design you'll need to retain a designer and start your brief. |

| How many kiddies? If you have one each couple, the cat is fine.

| Jim, there are cats out there with bunk beds in the forward staterooms, or you could add some to an existing boat. They are darn close to your wish list. |

| For me, the obvious question is how many people want to spend 2 weeks couped up in a relatively confined space with 3 other adults and 8 kids...?

| The market for charter boats for 8 kid families is very small. I don't think it is worth the investment on building boats for that.
