Marine plywood for structural bulkheads and interior

Good morning,
my name is Todor and at this particular moment May be I am the newest membre of the forum.I am from Varna Bulgaria (West coast of Black sea),I am building a 9,65 m motorsailor "Kodiak''.The problem at the moment is that I can not find marine plywood for the above use in my country,does any body know some place in EU where from this stuff might be delivered.
I would not consider Okume,would prefere Sapele.

It is possibly the easiest way to buy it in Istanbul. There are almost all kinds of marine ply available. I´ll check out details tonight an post then.

Hello again,
my first idea was not the best, to start with.
Here in Stambul we have every kind of marine ply available, naturally imported. Means custom, tax paid once. Bringing that to Varna means custom and tax again. I did not bear that in mind.
My yard told me you should try first to play with your personal connections to your local shipyards. SHIPYARDS not boat
They use a lot of marine ply in general and may agree to give you some sheets for a reasonable price. Or put on their next order.
Moreover my yard is shure!!! that the stuff must be easily available in Bulgaria!

thats a manufacturer specialized on marine ply and the like. German...... lookup your wallet....... but the quality is far beyond any doubt. And they are used to export their products, so you have no hassle. Anyway within EU

I will investigate your ideas,even may be I will visit the boat show in Istanbul on 13/14/02/09,I am working very often with our Shipyards in Varna and Bourgas,I am a LR surveyor.
The German idea is also good,because I will not pay VAT (20%)

Hi Richard, I have found some marine plywood in Istanbul,after I have visit the boat show on 13/02/2009,all my investgations on the prices in EU,USA and Turkey demonstrated that the best final price is in Turkey ,for a certified marine plywood (RINA or LR ,basic ply ocume and both sides veneer -SIPO or SAPELLI).

Now I wonder what tickness of ply should I use for the inside sheathing of the superstructure,I would use 3mm OCUME covered one side 2 mm veneer SIPO,what I am afraid is the weights -to much above the WL??
If any body can help with advise? Any alternative way for decoration inside?

Hello Todor, so my first idea was not the worst, I´m glad to notice, that I could help you.
To your Question, what do you mean with sheathing, does the superstructure exist and you are going to apply a panel on the inside? Decoration only?
And what is 3mm Okoume COVERED 2mm veneer? 5mm in total?
Can you give us some drawings, photos?
As a first estimation, if I understood your request right, a 5 mm paneling (both sides EP coated), on a 9,5 mtr. motorsailer, with all the outcuts for windows, portholes, etc. should not add too much weight to the superstructure.
But that is just my first impression. Please provide some further info to let us find a serious result.

Thank you Richard for the help.
The boat is under constructions I bought plans from Glen-L (USA)I am still fabricating the male mold,but some time in the summer I have to start deck,accomodations etc.You may see the plans on <glen l kodiak 29> in Internet,for info I have added Nord See stern (round) instead of transom as on the plan.(professionaly done by the Naval Architect),
By the way I am a Marine Engineer with 30 years experiance in the Shipping
,incl.17 years with Lloyd's Register.Am I looking crasy to build a boat on my own after this CV?
Accomodation is (rather will be) of 12 mm Ocume ,and from inside I would like to put 3 mm Ocume with 2 mm Sipo veneer,as a sheathing plus wooden grill underneath.The idea is that I dont like to have open beams and to have space for cable works etc.

By the way I just have been knoked down by the Vetus price of the windows and port holes - 3200 Eu!

If you still have the "Istanbul Boat Show" exhibitors list, you can find Turkish manufacturers for the hatchs and portlights. Some with CE certification also.

Thank you dear coleagues,
Port holes and windows; the prices in USA are realy good but transport costs are hight,I already contacted BOFOR in Turkey,I would say that the prices are reasonable,less than VETUS,for the port holes with AL frames,and the fact that Turkey is in EU Custom Union ,makes the thing easier-no custom duties,only VAT.This a veri good idea.I hope that the quality is reasonable as well,for the quality I have no info,only the catalog sayings.

Hi Irakli,
We have to thank to Richard,his idea to buy from Turkey works well.
Now,I have contact with manufacturer in Turkey,Istanbul.Please note that as the Turkey is in Custom Union with EU countries I will not pay custom duties.
Usualy the plywood in Turkey is OCUME (west Africa tree) and addionaly covered with 1 to 4 mm veneer (sapelli,sipo,akajou teek etc.).Company name I am contacting is BAHAR in Tuzla,Istanbul,contact persone Mr,Bayram Vatansever tel.+905324677455.I am not sure if I can give you the prices in this forum,I will contact you on your e-mail immediately after the eastern.
The plywood is a marine type ,type approved by RINA.If you speak to bayram you can give him my best regards.
