Damn good question! I'm still working on that one. Kayak rules of occupancy can be a bear sometimes. They are ...

-no standing in the cockpit
-no moving up to the bow
-be able to furl any sail or other crap you hang on the boat so you can paddle home

... break one rule and you may not occupy the cockpit for long
