Hydraulic Backstay Adjuster

All hands,

This question is a long shot...

The hydraulic backstay adjuster on my Dufour 39 has given up the ghost, it leaks like a sieve. But other than that it appears to be in pretty good shape.

The previous owner had it installed on the boat, and the only information he had on it's origin is that, "it came off of a sixty-five footer..."

The only identifying marking on it is a logo on the face of the dial that looks like to back-to-back parenthesis marks. i.e., )(

The fasteners are metric.

Does this strike a familiar note with anyone?

Not much to go on I realize... but worth $1,200, or so, if I can rebuild it.

Sounds like an old David Carne unit. Is it a Stainless Steel unit? Hopefully the leak is only an o-ring seal, anything else and you're out of luck.

It isn't worth 1200 in any currency.

If you take it apart and remove the o-rings and seals, a hydraulic parts supplier should have what you need. Many parts are universal.

It is stainless. The top end is machined aluminum, the lower end is stainless. The leak is a pain in the ass, my transom will attest to it!

I fabricated a stainless "link" to replace it until the unit is repaired. Hopefully I can find what I need at the local hydraulic repair shop... of course the parts will probably have "John Deere" on them, but what the hell, as long as they work

Any leads on David Carne? I will assume (always dangerous) that it is a low-volume production unit... the serial number is hand engraved on the tube.

And you are correct, it isn't worth $1,200 in any currency, but that IS what a new Navtec lists at... .. . if I need to replace the old one.

Your backstay adjuster is a Veretex. I literally pulled the label offof mine 5 minutes ago and was searching for info for my files. I can't find anything. I assume your boat is a French built boat as is mine. I had mine rebuilt a few years ago. I took it to a friends hydraulic shop. They changed a couple of O rings, I gave him a case of beer Nd itsbeen fine ever since. These thingsare very basic hydrLic rams and any decent shop can fix them easily.
