Hull joint extrusion

I'm seeking a source for hull/deck joint aluminum/rubber extrusion.

I've tried every combination of words I can think of on Google, and exhausted the Thomas Register. I know it's out there.

Any leads would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lew Morris

Hi Lew,
From my experience, the boatbuilding extrusion are not available on the open market.
Capral from Australia has some custom extrusion that might be available for sale but I did not research it further since the shipping cost from Australia to Canada would be expensive.
I have contacted aluminium extrusions manufacturer in Quebec and they have confrm that most of the hull/deck extrusion are "closed" and are only available to the owner of the extrusion die. Also most extrusion manufacturer know nothing about the the purpose of the custom extrusion that they are making so it is very difficult to know if they have some hull/deck extrusion. They have hundreds of custom extrudion die and they fill out orders for hundreds of different customers.
Most of their business is Architectural extrusion and window frames.

I might order some custom extrusions for one of my project in a few weeks but I am still not certain that it is going to be worth it since I will have to design the profile myself and to test it.

About the extrusions:
The profile really depends on the plate thickness. An extrusion used with 1/8" aluminium plate will not fit 3/16" plate. One solution is to locate the extruson that you want on an existing boat and contact the manufacturer to try to purchase it from them.

One final work, the minimum quantity for an extrusion run for the manufacturer that I spoke with was about 1 ton. And they charge about 600 USD for the tooling in extra. This means that you are looking at about 6500 USD for the first order and you will get one ton of extrution! And since your deck and hull thickness are specific, most potential customers will not be able to use your model and you will have to build about 50 boats to make it worthwhile.
Please give me your hull thickness, the deck thickness and a brief description of the extrusion shape, if I find anyhing, I will let you know.
Please send me a .cc at my private Email leblancc_99@yahoo.com since I only visit this site a few times per month

Best regards

Thanks for your help Charles,

I finally found what I needed at TACO Metals. Their extrusions are readily available (on the consumer level) through West Marine. They will, of course, cut dies and supply material for manufacturers.

TACO has a cross-reference available (catagorized by manufacturer) for OEM extrusion replacement. Cross sections and TACO part numbers are listed).

You may want to check them out

Hi Lew,

my mistake! I was under the impression that you were looking for Chine extrusion to build a hard chine boat with aluminium plate!

I have been researching these type of chine extrusion for one project that I am currently involved with. I want to build hard chine aluminium catamaran. I have been looking all over and I could only find the extrusion catalogue posted on... "boatdesign.net"
Finally I called some extrusion maker in my area and they said that If I design the profile, they will build the extrusion die and extrude it. The price is not that great and if I go ahead, I do not even know if I will be able to meet the minimum quantity.

I am glad that you found what you were looking for.
