Dynamic Stability Systems-IMOCA approves!

Hugh Welbourn's DSS has been approved for use on IMOCA 60 racing monohulls according to Seahorse magazine's Sept. 2010 issue. This is a momentous step for Mr. Welbourn and it is the first monohull ocean racing class to allow hydrofoils(foil assist) and in that regard it is a momentous step for sailing in general!

Interesting times, If the DSS works aswell as proclaimed we are in for some pretty major developments in the monohull world.

I and I'm sure many others will watch with interest.

Just another point, you'll have to excuse my ignorance, but is the DSS accepted by IRC?

I don't know about IRC except that there is a measurement in the rule for the "wingspan" of wings attached to appendages. Like many people, the rulemakers probably didn't envision DSS but there seems wide latitude within the rule so it could be allowed-but at what penalty?
