Brian, that would be a "kettingstopper", or maybe they tie a knot? or pay for half! Also I have recollection of Wharram sailors enthusiasm for some kind of loop & toggle arrangment where the "toggle" is made of rope- maybe thats one. All the best in your shacke search from Jeff.
