Designing a Sailboat Hey guys, I'm currently trying to draw a sailboat on Rhino and i'm having trouble with the dimensions. How deep can the interior of the sail boat get to? The boat is 20m long and 4m wide if that helps. Thanks Victor

If you're just drawing a sailboat, then you can make the interior as deep as you like. If it looks good, then great. If you're attempting to design a sailboat, then building it and expecting some level of success, such as floating with the decks facing up on launch day, I'd suggest you have much to learn first, before attempting to design a sailboat. There are several good books that will lead you down the right path. Search "yacht Design" in the book store on this site.

Thanks Par, I'm just drawing it now but i want to know if it will be possible to make it later so I just wanted to know on average how deep does the interior get too. victor

| PARs point is, there is no average. depth of the interior is dependent on a lot of variables other than length and breadth. As he said, make it as deep as you want as long as it looks good. How much head room do you want? Would a 6 foot person be able to stand up without giving themselves a concussion?

I think a box keel could work . Then put seats on the side. Its a start anyway . F

Yea, Frank, but you have to know what a boxed keel is and why it's shaped the way it is, to make an effective hull form on the water. On the screen is one thing, taking family and friends farther from shore then they can swim back to is another, all together different animal, which I'm sure you know.

For very basics, maybe a project 1/3 the size you're attempting, I'd suggest the rudimentary "How to Design a Boat" by John Teale. It's very good for introducing concepts like the various formulas you need to calculate as you progress with your design. Not so much into the shape design, but it's a very nice and easy to grasp start, making it easier to understand the reasons for X,Y, and Z as you built a pre-designed boat. Once you grasp that, then you can move up to more complex books.

Over the years I've come to understand there are two types of people here on this site. One group is interested in learning, actually building and sharing knowledge and the other is interested in seeking attention, confirmation of their poorly thought out concepts and acknowledgement of their successes before even trying. It just isn't worthwhile putting in the effort to help the second group. -- CutOnce
