Deck Structure?

Was at the Annapolis sailboat show this past weekend. Saw a number of cruising boats with port arrangement that had me puzzled. This sort of bubble shaped pilot house, with large light ports just aft of the mast on top of the deckhouse, large ports on the side of the deckhouse transversely in line with these top ports, and ports in the side of the hull just below the gunwhale in the same transverse section. To my eye, there was almost no upper flange structure in the middle of the boat where you would think it was a necessity.

Are these styles ripe for long term structural problems? The Waquiez boats and a few others were like this.
