Aw yes, you are talking apparent winds that the vessel might attain upon getting to these faster speeds. But what sails are needed to get to these sort of apparent wind speeds by displacement boats, or even cruising laden multihulls?

This reminds me of the old argument as to whether it is faster to run straight down to the leeward mark verses tacking downwind (in a race). Unless you have a vessel that's truly capable of going fast enough to create lots of apparent wind, and subsequently pull it around towards its bow, you are likely better off sailing straight downwind,...and here big mainsails can be more problematic than headsails.

 

All true but you can go ddw in a decent planing hull going past the slow boats.
Takes more money and its more uncomfortable but wins races.
