hmmm - seems to be attache to the wrong end of the donks for intakes - I thought maybe bloody great big mufflers....

No idea Will, but notice the insulated cylinder connecting the mystery apparatus to aft end of engine. Turbocharger??

Vessel specs say they are Cat 3512B's (twin turbo and aftercooled) and they look like them. You can see the air silencers for the intakes on the aft end of the port engine. A photo of the vessel shows no stacks and you can see the lagged water exhaust piping on the starboard engine. Willallison is most likely correct, that they are mufflers and/or a balance chamber for the submerged exhaust. Also could be some waste heat recovery piping in there also, but you can't really tell

That's exactly what this is, rather waste heat boilers. We used them in the Navy for heating, cooking, etc... Exhaust comes off the turbos, up through the bottom of the boiler, baffles snake it through, then exits out the large insulated pipe on the top (foreward?) end as shown on the far engine. Pretty nifty.

Actually, they are pizza ovens. Delicious thin high gluten crust,NY style, grande cheese and fresh pack tomato sauce from stanislaus in california. When you got it, flaunt it! But waste not want not.
