waste water pump

Hello everyone
I have build a 8 ft long 4 ft wide hydroplane plans from the 50's polular science mag . I was planing on installing a 3.5 hp water pump from northern tools this pump will pump 240 gpm with a 2 inch outlet.
The "plan" is to use the pump as a jet to power the boat in a shallow river ( about 10inchs) Has anyone tried this if so how did it work.
Thanks
kenny

I got a couple of them honda pumps and I just don't think you will be happy with the thrust they produce if you are going for speed. If you are trying to make a slow little jet powerd sneek i think it should push you around some.In the toun I live in junk jet skys and wave runners are pilled miles high and are free or next to nothing The pump out of them is removed easiely the pump has a sterable clam shell on one end with a cable atached all ready, the other end has a shaft sticking out of it with a coupler on it allready and the bottom has the intake grate. It is a cool little pump once removed from the sky.I have thought about puting one in some little runabout before.you would like a high RPM engine like the 2 strokes they use.Maybe a 5 or 8 horse brigs could push it allong slowly or nicely Who knows. But I think A 2 stroke dirtbike motor would kick ass .A water cooled one ,Mid 1980s to present a 125 or a 250 would be the cats ass ,you could cool it with river water and it allready has a pump just hook it to a thrue hull with a scoop in the back of the boat some were or a spigot tube doun the back of the transome facing forward and doun 3 inches would flow good water or maybe the jet pump could be used for its circulation because it is allways pumping when the engine is running.Neutral is achieved by pointing the thrust strait doun with the clamshell.good luck

8' X 4' hydro? Hope you weigh less than 90#. Planing? Go with a 2 stroke OB. Put lots of foam under the bow, easyer to find boat. DO NOT cross ANY boat wakes!!!! USE the ignition kill switch line tied to your belt. Tighten the steering tension screw on the motor so the boat motor stays in the same position when you let go of the wheel. Good luck.

Yea we tried it last weekend. It moved (about a regular walk was top speed. )Then after about 20 min either the pump or the motor locked up. the motor and the pump was found at the dump and had been under water and mud for some time.
Everyone should be able to view the pictures. I have a local TV show here and videoed the building of the boat and of our first run with it. My son hosted the show.
Check out the show here
