Volvo engine problems

Hi - I have Monterey power boat fitted with a Volvo Penta 5.0lt GXI engine with an SX drive the motor has done less than 50 hours but we're having endless trouble with it - first of the dealer thought it was valve lifters they changed all the lifters then there was problems with the fuel injection system, thats now fixed but the original noise is still there -

The noise is a tapping knocking noise heard at the back of the engine on the port side which goes away as RPM increases but then returns once the engine returns to idle after around 20 seconds

Has any one out there had any similar problems with these engines

I was thinking of the oil pump, but its on the other side.

PDF has better diagram.

Richard - thanks for the response the dealer also thinks it may be the oil pump gears as they have noted that the presure gauge fluctuates at idle albeit it holds good PSI +/- 40 - however they have no experience of these engines here

Tell us more about when this noise occurs. Warm engine ? Cold Engine ?
Does anything change when the outdrive is turned (When steering the unit) ?
Any difference if the gear is in neutral/forward/reverse ?

That this could originate from an oilpump problem I find very unlikely.

Volvo engine problems

Hi Karl - we have been testing with the boat out of the water, from cold there is no noise when the engine begins to warm up the noise starts and as the engines attains operating temperature the noise becomes louder - steering position does not appear to influence the noise - Gear has always been in neutral during test - we have listened to the drive with a scope but didnt hear any abnormal noise

Having researched this further I agree that the noise is not likely to come from the oil pump it is just odd that the gaugue fluctuates at idle..??

Thanks
