spring line

new to useing a slip what is the spring line and how is it used in docking your boat thanks

The spring line goes at a sharp angle from the dock to the boat. It is used to limit the fore and aft movement of the boat. Often two spring lines, one going aft and one forward are used.

A spring line is also a maneuvering assist... your rudder and propellor steers the bow or the stern into the dock...the spring line brings the middle of the boat onto the dock.
