Single Volvo AD41 in Carver 27'

After a lot of thought I’ve decided to purchase a AD41 (Turbo 3.6L 200hp inline 6cyl 520kg with leg) I am convinced this engine will pack enough punch to allow me to cruise around 18-20kt in my Carver Montego Mid-Cabin which currently has twin 4.3 OMC V6’s (not going).

OAL 8.9 meters
Beam 2.9 meters
Weight 3200kg

Two install it I will have to modify the transom and centre stringers to suit single engine configuration. The centre stringers will have to be halved in height to allow the engine to sit lower in the engine bay and two beams will have to be laminated in for the new engine to sit on.

I would like help in engineering this design, ideas and tips would be great, my plan is to cut down and reinforce the centre stringers with roving and Chop matt, then laminate in to wooden beams for the engine to sit on.

I will post more pictures of the engine bay when the boat arrives (4 more days)

Does any one know of any good books to purchase in regards to installing and fitting out stern drives, i also want to obtain a Volvo penta AD41/DP workshop manual, can't seem to find one.

Your local VolvoPenta dealer should be able to get those for you. The shop manuals include installation instructions. A single diesel will more than half the original HP.

Thanks, ill try to find a local dealer.

As for the HP I don’t care about how fast I can go as long as I can cruise on the plan at relatively low fuel consumption.

The engine I have purchased arrives next week and will still be cheaper than rebuilding the V6’s and much cheaper to run.

Where I am in New Zealand there is not much use for a boat that can do 38+ KT
And the longest distance I want to travel one way is 50 miles to a small island off the coast; I don’t mind the journey taking 3 hours.
