PWC Engine mated to an inboard tranny?

There are a ton of 1930/40s small mahogany runabouts out there, but most call for smaller engines. Has any one tried to take a PWC engine and turn it into an inboard? Can it be done?

The problem would be a transmission hassle as most PWC engines spin at double the RPM of the old engines , and do not have a common SAE bellhousing.

Why not a small gas engine from an economy car , or VW diesel , if you do many hundreds of hours a year?
