I have an old clinton outboard leg that i wnat to try to convert with a lawnmower style verticle shaft engine. It seems possible, espcially if you make it a direct drive. But could you use a clutch of some sort? The clutches i have found for a mini bike or go kart all use a chain or belt to direct the power. Does anyone know of a clutch that can be used inline from the engine shaft to the drive shaft?

Lawnmower motors fitted to outboard legs have been available in many countries and have given lots of fun to many people, however, the motors were designed to run with a heavy mower blade attached.Without the extra weight many motors were difficult to start, even 4 stroke models especialy with a bit of age.The attached image shows an old penta outboard (which i have)with an inline shaft gear box giving neatural, forward and reverse.

You would be best to add a flywheel with about the same moment of inertia as the mower blade you pulled it from. Outboards usually either have a clutch down in the lower gearbox or don't need one. You could easily scrounge up a centrifugal or manual clutch that could be adapted to suit.
