| Drivelines. As I was looking for info of drivelines, I found that drivelines can be subdivided into two groups, depending on how the thrust are created. 'Screw propeller drive / Jet drive' Could anyone please let me know... 1. types of drivelines such as Vee ,Z, S drive (as many as you know) and each type that if you mentioned belongs to which one of the two groups. 2. Suitabale applications, For instance, jet drive is good for planing boat(?)(!) For me, it is really hard to find those on the net, almost all I could find were about automotive! : ( Thank you for your help! ![]() |

| Propeller drive types include: Straight shaft V-drive Z- or Stern-drive, I/O S- or Sail-drive Outboard, O/B Also podded engines, etc. All have their purposes. Z and V types put the engine far aft in the hull and are preferred for planing boats. Straight shaft can be set up for anything. S-drive is for displacement hulls only and usually as an auxiliary engine. Outboards are generally high-strung and most often seen on planing hulls, but some are useful on slower boats too. Many other varieties, such as Volvo IPS, exist for particular uses. Jet drives are mainly for high-speed hulls; the idea here is that you suck up water into the boat and throw it out the back through a nozzle. Generally thought to be a bit less efficient than props, but are less prone to damage and offer better acceleration and handling characteristics. Popular with high-speed ferries because their efficiency does not depend on the boat's load condition. If you see a nozzle, it's a jet. If you see a propeller somewhere, or if the boat only goes slowly, it's probably a prop.

| a hull is only a hull while a boat is a hull with stuff, like weelhouse, seat, consoles and so on. Hard to make up a definitive specification |
