broken pull start

Hello all ive broken my pullstart the string snaped
iv put it all together again but when i pull to start it, the engine starts but there is about 6in of cord that does not spring back in
please can any help or have any tricks

Either you cut the rope too long or didn't wind the spring enough

Cut the 6 inch off then and re tie it on the handle.
