Stern Tube design

I'm doing some case studies, for the enhancement of my design abilities. Can anyone help me how to start with the design of a stern tube. I have the shaft length, propeller diameter, and propeller rpm with me. Would you advise me my starting point and the proceedings like how to find the dimensions of the stern tube.
Also, I would like to know if the stern tube seal has any other function than imparting watertightness to the hull.

The stern tube has to acommodate whatever shaft gland or seal you install. That will determine OD(outside diameter)

The stern lines will determine the arrangement, and therefore the length of the stern tube. And yes, the stern tube must do more than just be watertight, and there are classification society rules as well. Mess this up on a large ship and you can easily get into multi-million dollar repairs and possible contract default.

Marine Engineering by SNAME, a whole chapter on shafting and analysis.

It is from SNAME itself, unless you get it used from a specialist bookseller.

http://www.sname.org/SNAME/SNAME/Home/

FWIW, it pays to join SNAME just to get the member discount on Marine Engineering, Principals of Naval Architecture, Ship Design and Construction, and Submersible Vehicle Systems Design. A professional NA should have all 4 of those references at thier fingertips for questions such as this one.

check in google. The basic drawing is available in the Introduction to Marine Engineering by D A Taylor, and Ship Construction by D J Eyeres.. This have giving the ratio of the thickness and other things of all almost all the members wrt shaft diameter. The only thing you need to worry is of stern tube seals. Of course, for that reason only I'm doing all these calculations.
