    I found this for sale,

    It looks decent to me.
I take it that it's completely gutted.
Seems maybe better than building a boat though, does it look like anything
    is actually wrong with it?
    Looks decent shape to me.
50 ft long, and 2 storey cabin.
2 x prop shaft, with propellors.
    Built 1990.
Might be a better start to a boat project, rather than the keel up.

what you guys think of it?

    It should be worth $2,000.00

Something odd about the shaft angles ? It appears that the propellor blade is deeper than the keel ???

What was this boat used for ?

The hull looks OK. Certainly worth a few thousand if the steel is sound.

What will you use it for ? Is there a picture of the boat floating ?

Funny, I also noticed the shaft angles and thought they were excessive, I wonder if the back of the boat sits really high maybe?

I don't know what it was used for yet.

I am trying to get pictures.

I thought someone would say this, I have to ask how you arrive at that number?

It actually is for sale for 5,000$, and is almost in the northwest territories, so it would cost about another 5,000$ just to get it to me.

So let's say my cost would be roughly 10,000$, could I build a boat hull that size for 10,000$? Theres probably 5,000$ worth of steel there, and the labor and design that would cost money too.

I found a whitefishing boat for 40,000$, and it's in running condition, but the hull looks very beat up compared to this. Plus it would cost as much to move also, so I'm not seeing how this could only be worth 2,000$ ?

Not trying to argue, just trying to understand.....

Looks like the boat was meant to chop thru ice or perform a special task.

What are those two fins, stakes, chine keels up forward for ?

The Prop shaft strut is on the chine ? Its huge. Strange.

It must be to protect the propeller from ice or logs or some fishing gear.

I don't know what the 2 fins are for, but I have seen them before on fishing boats on lake winnipeg, canada.
The whole propellor set up looks a little different than I've ever seen, I don't know what the story is.
I'm wondering because of it's location (Northern tip of BC), if it wasn't used as a freight or supply boat on some rivers going up north?
Or looking at the propellor size, do they look a tad big for a vessel this size? Maybe it was used as a tug boat to tow barges? The cabin was obviously build for visibility ...

Also it's painted brown, it isn't solid rust guys, it actually looks decent from what I can tell, remember it's only from 1990, it's not a 1950's boat or something.

    Park,

Is -$20,000 (yes they pay you) a reasonable answer to you?

If we assume that a working boat that needs some prettying up runs 40,000. Subtract from that the cost of new engines and transmissions, and you just made up more than the difference. Add in all the other running gear, and this boat would likely cost at least an additional 50,000 to get on the water.

Add in the time value of having to fix all the stuff yourself, and this is probably a lose money proposition.

I see what your saying, but now try from the other way -

An old running boat at that price will not have new or rebuilt engines, this could.
An old boat will still cost as much to move, so we need to put the transport costs off the table.

Honestly, despite that this boat is stripped out, the hull actually is in good condition, do you think I'd find a 50 ft boat in running condition in this shape for anything reasonable? I've been looking, and will keep looking, but honestly this seems like a great possibility to me.

I know there are stories of free hulls, free boats, etc, but I have yet to find anything like that, that I have access to anyways.
Please guys don't think I'm trying to ask for opinions just to argue and fight, I'm really trying to debate this from all angles.

My immediate thoughts are to install a pair of dt360 engines, rebuilt transmissions, and other necessary parts as I can find them for decent prices.

I would work on it in my yard, strip and paint, pretty up, maybe even look at adding more cabin space on the rear deck.
Honestly I'm thinking I can have a good boat after putting about 25,000$ into it, and a lot of my time.
This isn't going to be a high end pleasure yacht guys, just a cruising boat.

I did find a comparison, another similar style boat, 40 ft, 46,000$.

It looks much more beat up, all the hull panels are bent inwards, and the rust is far worse.

And the cabin looks just plain rotten.

So price the engines you would think of using. I have a suspicion that you would be looking at $75,000 or more just in the power. But it depends on what you want to put in it.

I arrived at the price considering it is a project. You can't compare prices directly with a new build. The price of transportation makes it a deal killer. There are used boats ready to go for $10,000 that need some work.

I would use dt360 engines with dry exhaust.
They are 5.9 liter diesel, and cheap and reliable.
1000$ running, 1400$ for rebuild kit.
They are not sought after, as the 466dt engines had more power in international buses and trucks.
They are wet sleeve, and about 170-200 hp each.
They have SAE #2 bell housing.

I would use something like these:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/ZF-63A-2-5-..._Accessories_Gear&hash=item2c6c3ae4b0&vxp=mtr

    ZF 63A 2.5 marine transmission/Hurth HSW 630 A1 (8% down angle)
Rated for 475 hp or less, 1800$.

Granted, it would be hundreds more for mounts, controls, etc.
    But not an insane amount.

You say that, but I can't find any.
I said earlier, I found a similar one running condition, but it was in worse shape.
Also who knows what shape engine was in, or other equipment.
Installing all new or reuilt equipment in a purchased hull has a benefit over an old unknown boat, even if it's running, maybe it's about to fall apart as soon as you get it.

    Park,

For this type of deal you pretty much have to walk the boat yards looking for distress boats. The yards will generally know how to contact the owner, who often just wants it gone.
