Devlin Designing Boat Builders announces kits

Olympia, WA – Devlin Designing Boatbuilders has teamed up with West Satsop Boatworks to create kits for some of Sam’s most popular designs. Devlin Designing Boatbuilders will have a booth at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival on September 9th thru 11th to roll out the new sales and marketing portal, http://kits.devlinboat.com. Sam is immediately offering kits of the 5x10 Skiff, Pond Skipper, Candlefish 13, Eider, Pelicano, Litl Coot, and Oarling, with several more in the pipeline. According to Sam; “Kits are an excellent way to get started right on a new boat - for a fraction of the price of a custom built boat or even a semi-completed hull.”
In collaboration with West Satsop Boatworks and their CNC manufacturing expertise, the team developed a computer designed and cut jig which assures that the bulkheads are aligned, level and square, saving many hours of time, and avoiding much of the risk for a novice boatbuilder. The jig and all the bulkheads for most designs can be erected in a couple of hours. It is a massive time saver. Sam reports; “West Satsop Boatworks is a dependable local company and have been great to work with. We have built several boats based on the CNC method and we have been consistently pleased at the ease of fit-up.”
The hull panels are cut from meranti or okoume BS1088 marine ply. The hull panel sections are joined end-to-end (scarphed) create long strakes using a puzzle-splice. This splice has been the subject of a great deal of engineering and testing. It goes together easily, is strong and provides for positive alignment of the panels.
In addition to boat kits, Devlin is also offering one-quarter scale model kits of the above boats. “Since the model kits also include a copy of the full-size boat plans, they are a great value for someone who is considering making the investment of time and money to build the real boat, without the risk” according to Sam.
