| Aluminum or steel boats are fine, but they are generally not production boats. At the current state of the dollar, the US pleasure boat industry should turn to mass production of such vessels, so they can take anvantage of the currency disparity vis a vis the growing demand for such boats. |

| The very nature of construction in sheet goods (plywood, aluminum and steel) demands a much higher amount of labor for just the hull and deck structures, which account for a small percentage of the overall cost of the yacht. The cost effectiveness of steel and aluminum doesn't come in, until the yacht size is generally in the one off or custom size range, making it even less likely a material for production work. Yachts large enough to have a real aft cabin (useable standing headroom) are going to be sufficient enough of a purchase to warrant a custom design if the industry doesn't provide one of liking in GRP, of which there are many to pick from. |
