Repower questions I will try this over in this side. I have a 23' hull I want to rebuild. I want to make it diesel, but am having issues with torque. I called Borg Warner and they were really helpful. Only bad news though. This boat only has a 14" prop and 1" shaft. The 5.9 cummins needs an 18" prop and 1.75" shaft. I am also playing with twin VW 110hp Turbo Diesels. Wont have the torque issues, but still need to put in new drive gear. I have been wondering about the "through the stern" to get the space for the bigger wheel and cover it with a swim platform. That setup Frosty did on the Cat looked simple and didnt seem to have big power if I remember right? Looking for an answer so I can get to building and stop agonizing over buildng. Thanks, Chris

Repower questions Thanks. That was whay Im looking for. I wish there were more pictures posted on how folks to theirs. CDK is the man! I hate to bother people when Im still so up in the air on what to do. The least expensive route I think, is go big with the 5.9 and modify the hull to take the bigger prop. I lad on the ground for about 45 minutes last night under their looking over the issues. It appars to be a 15 degree shaft angle now. Chris

23' hull, 1" prop shaft, 14" prop sounds like a typical runabout to me. Probably set-up for petrol engine in the 240 to 260 horesepower range. No need to apologize to me I was getting it. I think a prop pocket has possibilities but he needs a lot of information to move forward. Visualizing what one looks like is a good start.

Repower Here is what I have. 23' hull of a Uniflight "Salty Pup". I got it because of the lines. Now it has a single 1" shaft, 14" prop and rudder in place. It came with a Chevy 350 gas and a BW 71c 1 to 1 and had a top speed of 22knts., cruised at 18 knts. and was a gas hog. I want to reuild it into a diesel sport fishing boat. Mostly big rivers (Columbia, Willamette) bays, and the ocean on good days. What got me interested in this plan was the Shamrock Pilot House 20' and 26'. A CC is okay, but getting out of the sun, wind and rain here in Oregon would be good. Especially if I want my Wife and girls to go a second time. I just stopped by my supplier. He still has my 5.9 Cummins on hold. But now he is really teasing me. He jut got in a 2004 VW 1.9 turbo diesel with 74K miles on it. I didnt realize how much more space I would have with them. I could have the safety of two (yes I know more costs for two) and wouldnt need to build a bracket and buy a trolling/kicker motor. They litterally are only 20 inches tall and about 22Wx22L. The 5.9 is 40x40x40. 1.9's are 400 lbs ea. and the 5.9 is 1190 lbs. The 5.9 will need a bigger twin disc or Hurth. The VW can run on more common velvet drives and the shafts can be found more readilly I thnk. Not sure I would need to modify the hull, or at least as much? Doubt the VW will spin the 18" the 5.9 needs. The VW cost more ea. but the cost of transmission and gear difference, and not buying an outboard may be a wash? Plus the two will weigh almost 400 lbs less than the big one. The gear will weigh less too. Is that more to work with?

I will go back and read it again. I have read it countless times. What I need is a valid conclusion and current status update. Those are 2 years old and there is soo much arguing about whose plan is right. Id like to see results from people way smarter than me on this. I will see if there are more posts since the last time I read it. Thanks, Chris
