outboard help

Hi to all :-)
Not sure where to post this? Hope some 1 can help me out or give advice on where I can find out .........
early last summer I got my 1st small speed boat to have a some fun with the family at weekends, the thing is that the engine that came with was a 2002 Yamaha 9.9hp 4 stroke it was a little small for what I wanted to do with it so I got a bigger engine leaving the Yamaha doing nothing so I done a little research on how much it was worth then to my amazement it was worth 3 times what I paid for the boat & outboard put tougher at 1st I thought I had a great bargain but then got me thinkin that was the outboard stolen ? Is there any way or links to find out? Im in the uk

I think that either the police or Coast Guard may be able to find out with the serial number.
